Review: Before I Ever Met You by Karina Halle

Before I Ever Met You by Karina Halle – 2.5 Stars

I don’t really know why, but when I read Karina’s lighter books I notice she tends to:

· Label drop
· Explain every outfit, hairstyle, and room set up in explicit detail
· Write overlong, drawn out, unneeded conversations that add absolutely nothing to the plot and I find completely pointless. I’m guessing these details and conversations are supposed to depict the MCs developing a slow and organic romance, but it didn’t work for me. Their conversations bored me.

I didn’t like the insta lust/attraction in this and I found the repetitive details annoying. Which I just find confusing because the author does not do this with her “darker” books.

I loveeeeee forbidden romance with an older hero, but this story was not angsty or as intense as I would have liked it to be.  It felt like the author focused on such unnecessary details rather than building their attraction / relationship.

I found myself skimming a lot of this and when that happens, the book just isn’t for me. It was an okay read and pretty sweet but nothing to be shouting from the rooftops about. A few good sex lines here and there isn’t enough to wow me anymore. And with as little time I tend to have these days to read, I’m starting to be really over these “meh” books with overused story lines. They’re starting to feel like a waste of time and something I’ve read 1000 times before.

As always, I am sure people will enjoy this more than I did.

Review: The Hot Shot by Kristen Callihan ❤

“…I’m so gone on you. There’s no coming back from it.” I kiss those candy lips. “Haven’t you figured it out?” I say against them. “Every time I call you Chester, I’m saying I adore you. I fucking adore every part of you.”

The Hot Shot (Game on Series #4) by Kristen Callihan – 4.5 Stars

The Hot Shot = swoony hero, fantastic banter, HOT HOT HOT scenes, and an overall great story. For those who haven’t read this series, this book focuses on Finn Mannus, NFL quarterback, and Chester (yes that’s her name) Copper, a photographer who has been hired to photograph Finn and some of his teammates for a nude calendar shoot.

Right off the bat, Chess and Finn have that great banter I think Kristen has become known for:

“So? Are you coming or what?”
“Longing to see me, are you?”
“Yes,” she drawls. “I need to reconfirm that your head truly is that big.”
I’m grinning wide now, even though she can’t see me. “Which head are we talking about?”
“I’m hanging up….”

I saw Kristen say if Drew and Gray had a baby, it would be Finn. And I have to agree. He’s playful and funny like Gray, romantic like Drew, and so damn sexy and lovable just like the rest of her heroes. And while NO ONE can replace Drew, man oh man does Finn come close. After the 60% mark, I honestly highlighted everything that boy said. It’s been a while since a book has made me so giddy that I had to stop reading and clutch my chest while smiling like a loon. But Finn did that.

“Are you staying?” I croak out. Chess drops her gaze to the stove, and her fingers tighten around the handle of the spatula. “I like it here.”
I lean against the counter so I don’t make a fool of myself and fall to my knees. I love you here.
I clear my throat. “You keep making me breakfast, and you can stay here forever.”
She snickers. “I’d hold back on that declaration until you’ve tasted your breakfast. I’m not known for my cooking.”
Then I’ll make you breakfast forever.

“It’s not going to go away for me.” My arm slides from him as I look up.
“What isn’t?” Finn’s expression is solemn, but when he catches my eye, the corner of his lip quirks.
“Wanting you.”

You know what I also love? When you read a scene you LOVE so much, you need to go back and re-read it a few more times because you can’t let it go.

“So…” My mom says in a voice that is distinctly meddling. “Chess is nice.”
A smile pulls at my lips. “Nice isn’t how I’d describe her.”
“Oh? And how would you describe her? Here, use a plate.”
Perfect. Fuckable. Stunning. Funny. Mine.

I just want to say their first kiss was my absolute most favorite part. Besides fantastic banter, I think Kristen also writes some of the BEST ‘first kiss’ scenes.

And I realize this review is mostly just quotes from Finn, but I can’t help it, I ADORED HIM!

God, I love her smile. I want to keep teasing her just to see it bloom again and again. “It would have worked. I would have kissed you the way I’d wanted to since we met, and you would have been mine.”
“Oh really,” she deadpans, but I see the knowledge in her eyes.
“Really. I was made to kiss you, Chess.” She goes soft at that, giving me those bedroom eyes. And her voice grows husky, making me hard and tight with anticipation.
“Maybe I was the one made to kiss you, Finn.” Emotion rushes through my chest, taking my air, and I have to breathe deep.
“You were.”

There are two minor things that kept me from rating this a full 5 stars. 1. I found Chess to be a little….flat. Or maybe she just came across as cold? Whatever it was, I didn’t really connect with her as much as the other heroines in this series. And 2. I didn’t really see the need for the “conflict” that occurs towards the end. It kind of came out of nowhere and I could have done without it.

Other than those things, I clearly enjoyed this book. Even if you haven’t read this series (but you really really should), I HIGHLY RECOMMEND reading this awesome story.

There will be a battle, and you will need to protect your heart.

Kjell of Jeru had always known who he was. He’d never envied his brother or wanted to be king. He was the bastard son of the late King Zoltev and a servant girl, and the ignominy of his birth had never bothered him.

But there is more to a man than his parentage. More to a man than his blade, his size, or his skills, and all that Kjell once knew has shifted and changed. He is no longer simply Kjell of Jeru, a warrior defending the crown. Now he is a healer, one of the Gifted, and a man completely at odds with his power.

Called upon to rid the country of the last vestiges of the Volgar, Kjell stumbles upon a woman who has troubling glimpses of the future and no memory of the past. Armed with his unwanted gift and haunted by regret, Kjell becomes a reluctant savior, beset by old enemies and new expectations. With the woman by his side, Kjell embarks upon a journey where the greatest test may be finding the man she believes him to be.

Sempre by JM Darhower – my most favorite book of all the books!

I recently realized I never properly reviewed the first book to my most favorite series ever on the blog (I’m so ashamed) which I am currently re-reading. And with book one, Sempre, STILL being on sale (GET IT NOW IF YOU HAVEN’T!! Link below 🙂 ) I had to share my review for the first and best mob book I have read.

Sempre (Sempre #1) by JM Darhower – 5 HUGE TESORO STARS

Grabbing her hand, he pressed it gently to his chest. His skin was warm to the touch, and she could slightly feel his pulse pounding against her palm.
“Do you feel that? I’m not going anywhere, Haven. This is yours.”

I mean, am I supposed to just go on after reading this thing?!

I know there are many reviews that explain the plot in detail, so I won’t go into it, but I just desperately needed to express my love for this story.

What perfect, emotional, heartbreaking, soul crushing, sweet, sad, incredible story. I literally had goose bumps the entire time, and was left with no fingernails after biting them all off from the suspense. This story is so insane and all the characters are so entwined I wouldn’t even know where to start to go into details about the story line even if I wanted to. And what is most amazing about it is the simple way it’s written. To me, it read so well each scene played out like a movie in my mind. If this was a movie, I would have watched it 7,356 times already.

“I love you.” The words tumbled from her lips easily, like they had rolled from her tongue hundreds of times. But they hadn’t. She had never said them before, but as she heard them in her own voice, every cell in her body knew they were true. She hadn’t known what love was, but she knew it now. Love was the fluttering in her tummy whenever Carmine was near, the twinkle in his eyes when he laughed, the heat in her body from his words. Love was happy. Love was safe. Love was green. Love was him—the beautifully flawed boy who made her glow.”

I will say this- Vincent- God at first I hated him and could not understand the man for the life of me. But as the story unfolded, I definitely understood and grew to love him. Especially at the end when he finally accepts the past and, well, you’ll have to see what happens…GODDDDDD SO SWEET.

Celia and Corrado are freaking amazing, Dominic is a sweet heart who I wished was my relative.

And the best for last – Carmine and Haven -SIGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. I mean could a smart ass, impatient, foul-mouthed little rebel be any more amazing??! And Haven, oh sweet Haven. What a strong and sweet person she was. Their love was just epic.

“I have a problem with my temper. It’s just, I feel . . .” He hesitated, taking a deep breath. “Look, it’s not because I think you belong to me—it’s because I want you to be mine.”

This is easily one of the most incredible books I have ever read. Definitely in my top favorites of all time. *UPDATE* MOST DEFINITELY MY MOST FAVORITE BOOK OF ALL TIME.

Now- I have wasted enough time writing this and wasted precious moments not reading Sempre: Redemption. I am off to meet with my sweet Carmine once again. I am so happy I was introduced to this story that made me fall in love and broke my heart all at the same time.

❤Sempre, Sempre Redemption, Friends & Forever (novella -which is FREE), and Made ❤
