Loved this? Then read that!

Welcome to my newest Tuesday blog feature “This then -> That” where I will be listing books you may love based on books previously read. I always get asked to recommend books similar to others, so I thought this would be a great way to share them!

IF YOU LIKED:

Shatter Me Series by Tahereh Mafi

THEN YOU SHOULD TRY:

Mara Dyer Trilogy by Michelle Hodkin

Here’s why:

Both are YA paranormal/ romance that feature heroines who don’t really know what is happening to them. Plots wrapped in crazy mystery, plus hysterical side characters and a swoon worthy hero(s) make both these series ABSOLUTE must reads!

Some favorite quotes from both series

“You want me as much as I want you. And all I want is you.”
My tongue warred with my mind. “Today,” I whispered.
Noah stood slowly, his body skimming mine as he rose. “Today. Tonight. Tomorrow. Forever.” Noah’s eyes held mine. His stare was infinite. “I was made for you, Mara.”
― Michelle HodkinThe Unbecoming of Mara Dyer

“You can’t hurt me the way you think you can. But even if you could? I would rather die with the taste of you on my tongue than live and never touch you again. I’m in love with you, Mara. I love you. No matter what you do.”
― Michelle HodkinThe Evolution of Mara Dyer

“All I ever wanted was to reach out and touch another human being not just with my hands but with my heart.”
― Tahereh MafiShatter Me

“I want to be the friend you fall hopelessly in love with. The one you take into your arms and into your bed and into the private world you keep trapped in your head. I want to be that kind of friend. The one who will memorize the things you say as well as the shape of your lips when you say them. I want to know every curve, every freckle, every shiver of your body.

I want to know where to touch you, I want to know how to touch you. I want to know convince you to design a smile just for me. Yes, I do want to be your friend. I want to be your best friend in the entire world.”

Review of Shatter Me Series by Tahereh Mafi

To say I want to KICK MYSELF for waiting so long to read this series is the understatement of the year. I have had it on my TBR FOREVER. And for whatever reason, lately YA reads have been calling to me. Possibly because I feel like most books I have been picking up are the same old boring storyline. But this series was just what I was looking for. Fast-paced, different, beautifully written, and wildly entertaining.

I fell in love with everything about it. With the characters, with the storyline, with the poetic detailed way it’s written, strike-outs and all.

I love picking up a book and being immediately immersed in the world the author creates. I love it even more when each and every character is so unique, so refreshing, and make me fall instantly in love with them. And this right here is one of those stories.

“You can’t touch me,” I whisper. I’m lying, is what I don’t tell him. He can touch me, is what I’ll never tell him. Please touch me, is what I want to tell him.
But things happen when people touch me. Strange things. Bad things.
Dead things.”- Juliette

He whispers, “You have no idea how much I’ve thought about you. How many times I’ve dreamt ” – he takes a tight breath – “how many times I’ve dreamt about being this close to you.” He moves to run a hand through his hair before he changes his mind. Looks down. Looks up. “God Juliette, I’d follow you anywhere. You’re the only good thing left in this world.” – Adam

I won’t waste anyone’s time with plot details, especially considering I am one of the few humans left who hasn’t read this yet. And it can certainly be looked up on Goodreads. But if you haven’t picked this up yet and are looking for a thrilling read and an addicting love triangle, this is it. Just when I thought I knew whose team I was on, Tahereh threw in one romantic moment after another and I was so confused! The fandom of this series is incredible, and hearing and reading about  #TeamAaron or #TeamWarner was so fun.

I found it thrilling, addicting, found the writing absolutely stunning, couldn’t put it down, and this has definitely become a new favorite series of mine!

TOP Reads of 2015 (and a giveaway!)

untitled

2015 has flown by, and with it went some amazing reads. Below I have listed my top favorite reads that were published in 2015 (in no particular order).

1. Long Way Down (Addicted Series) by Krista and Becca Ritchie
One of my top favorite series of all time, Long Way Down was the beautiful conclusion to the series with my favorite couple, Ryke and Daisy. #RaisyForever

2. The Black Wolf (In the Company of Killers Series) by JA Redmerski

Looking for a bad ass heroine, action, and suspense? This series is it! And there’s been whispers it’s going to be turned into a TV show!

3. By Any Other Name by JM Darhower
If you know me, you know JM Darhower is my absolute FAVORITE author. SO anything she writes will be a favorite of mine. By Any Other Name is the story of 2 kids from rival mafia families who fall in love, a la’ Romeo and Juliet 😍.

4. Bad Romeo/Broken Juliet by Leisa Rayven
This duet has it all: laughs, romance, angst. Leisa’s words are utterly beautiful (and freaking hysterical).

5. Confess by Colleen Hoover
It’s Colleen Hoover, need I say more?

6. November 9 by Colleen Hoover
See description from #5.

7. Here’s to Falling by Christine Zolendz
Man, can this woman make a person cry! Christine just has a way with words that immediately touch your heart.

8. The Legal Briefs Series by Emma Chase
NO ONE writes the male perspective like Emma Chase. This series was phenomenal and highly recommended.

9. The Friend Zone (Game on Series) by Kristen Callihan
The first two books from this series, The Hook Up & The Friend Zone are top favs and made me fall in love with Kristen’s writing. SEXY, funny, and even though they are set within college life, the characters were so easy to connect to.

And because this is my favorite series EVER, and even though I didn’t read it in 2015 nor was it released in 2015, I am mentioning it anyway because if you haven’t read this series yet, I promise you, you’re missing out:

10. Sempre (Forever Series) by JM Darhower
This series…is everything. My favorite books out of all the books in the history of books.

A letter to Emma Chase (and a review of Appealed)

Dear Emma Chase,

I’d like to ask you a favor. Please hear me out before you decline.

Can you stop writing such swoon worthy men? Can you stop creating these perfect specimens that are equal parts sexy, funny, smart, and did I mention SEXY??!?!?

My poor boyfriend can’t live up to these delicious men you’ve created. He’s starting to get jealous. What’s even worse is I thought I knew who I loved the most. Drew was always number one, but then came Jake, and there’s Stanton, and Matt. And now you throw in the insanely amazing Brent and a girl is just so confused!!!

It’s really not fair. I am going to wind up single with nothing but your fictional men to keep me company.

Sincerely,

Girl who can’t choose who she loves the most (And totally kidding. Don’t you EVER stop writing),

OK NOW FOR MY REAL REVIEW :

“I am in love with you. When I look at you, think about you, I can’t decide if I want to fuck you, strangle you, or just hold you in my arms. Usually all three. And if that’s not love, I don’t know what is.”

The third and final installment of The Legal Briefs Series – Appealed (can be read as a standalone) brings together two of my favorite set ups– enemies-to-lovers and second-chance-romance, and I.LOVED.IT.

Brent and Kennedy grew up together, living next door to one another with their families being very close. Best friends since childhood, they share one amazing night together when they are 17 before a misunderstanding causes it all to go terribly wrong and they part ways.

14 years later, Kennedy is back, all grown up, more beautiful than ever, and still pissed at what went down between them. Brent is shocked to see her, always considering her ‘the one that got away’, and even more shocked to learn she is the prosecutor on his current case.

As always, the banter Emma writes is fan-freaking-tastic, and I laughed out loud so many times I lost count.

“I’m not doing this with you again, Brent. You’re not sucking me back in.”
My jaw tightens. “Okay. How about you explain what that means?”
“How about you go fuck yourself with a lacrosse stick?”
Hello, Square One – long time, no see.
I tilt my head, like I’m thinking it over. “Sports equipment is a hard limit for me. But if you want to play with toys, count me in.”

The chemistry and feelings between them were just so hot, so beautiful, and so perfect. Emma builds the underlying sexual tension brilliantly with each of their hilarious interactions. And once these two get together….let the swooning commence:

“Brent…” She gasps, fingers running through my hair. “This is real. Tell me this is real.”
My eyes jerk up to hers and I cup her jaw in one hand. “It’s real. This is so real I can’t stop shaking.”

“…what if the reason I’ve never let myself fall in love with a woman is because I didn’t have anything to give? Because I’d already given my heart to her when we were seventeen years old? And all these years…I’ve just been waiting for her to come back to me with it.”

And then this little gem:

“Christ Kennedy, your pussy is so fucking pretty.” She moans at my words. “This is made to be kissed and licked and fucked all damn day – and night.”

Needless to say, I loved it, loved everything about it!! It was beautifully romantic, funny as all hell, and a perfect mix of sweet and sexy. I was also SO happy to see the other characters from the previous books play their part in the story, and that extended epilogue? SWEETNESS OVERLOAD. My cheeks still hurt from smiling so hard.

As I mentioned above, Appealed can technically be read as a standalone, though I most definitely recommend reading the other 2 books first. Not only are they great reads, but getting to know the other amazing characters beforehand will definitely make this book 10x more enjoyable. I have enjoyed this series SO MUCH, and this book finished the series off just beautifully.

Funny, romantic and beautifully heart-warming, I absolutely adored every word!

Father Bell is back! Midnight Mass by Sierra Simone is live!

Father Bell is back baby!

Blurb:

We are told that God will punish the wicked.  That sinful men will reap what they sow.  We are told to scourge our souls with prayer and pain to become clean once again.

Well, here I am.  Wicked and sinful.  Desperate to become clean…even though it feels so good to be dirty.

But even I never expected what came next.

Even I never expected my punishment to come so soon.

***Midnight Mass is a novella and a sequel to Priest.  It’s intended for mature audiences only.***

My Review:

Three years into married life, Tyler and Poppy are realizing marriage isn’t as easy as they thought it would be. With their busy schedules and Tyler’s constant guilt over the choices he’s made, they find themselves looking for that insanely hot connection they have had. I love Sierra’s writing, and even though this was a novella, I certainly got my fix of the insanely racy couple.

The scenes between Tyler and Poppy are just as stupidly sexy as the first book.

Sierra’s writing is just as intriguing.

And Tyler. Tyler is JUST AS SINFULLY HOT as he was in Priest.

The ending was bittersweet but perfect and I loved getting the chance to be back in Poppy and Father Bell’s world for a short time.

I just read the strangest story..and I loved it. (Badger by MC McKenna)

4.5 Stars

… “My name is Adrian Birch, and I’m nobody.”

“My name is Adrian Birch, and I used to be nobody. An apologist, a coward. Then I met a madman on a bicycle and I lost my mind, lost my way, got my heart broken and my head rewired, and woke from a nightmare of my own design, fear gone like an ex-lover I’d never spread my legs for again.”

This story was nothing like I have read before. Adjectives to describe this? Extremely disturbing, smart, surprisingly humorous, emotional, and distressing.

To keep the plot nice and simple, this is the story of Adrian- former pill popper who is now trying to redeem herself. She is self-deprecating and constantly feels guilty for the mistakes she’s made. But while battling her former addiction, she acquires a new fascinating unhealthy one that comes in the form of a striped-hoodie-wearing, bicyclist “vigilante” who has been nicknamed ‘Badger’ (real name Isaac).

They meet, they exchange horror stories, and ultimately decide there is no way someone like Badger will ever be the person Adrian needs. Interestingly enough, their fucked up relationship is what drives Adrian to move toward being the person she has wanted to be. The pull remains so strong throughout the whole story between the hero and the heroine, though, and you can’t help but get giddy whenever he appears.

The character of Badger is someone you think you may have come across before, but I bet you haven’t.

“I have a really nasty temper, and no restraint. I’ve basically got no impulse control, so I do whatever I feel like, the second I feel it. I’m also into really fucked-up sex.”

I blinked. “Oh.”

“Plus, since I got no impulse control, I tell girls I just met that I’m into really fucked-up sex.”

“You don’t say.”

“I’m a fucking mess,” he said, with the delivery of someone remarking about the weather, like, shrug, What can you do?”

Throughout Adrian’s journey, you can’t help but relate to her overwhelming addiction to the buzz she feels around Isaac. I found myself wishing with the simple snap of Adrian’s fingers, Isaac would transform into the softer person he VERY rarely lets peak out. You’ll want Adrian to magically fix him with every fiber of your being, to be the catalyst in his life that brings him the help he so obviously needs.

“I’ve known since forever that I’m nuts,” he said. “Because I got told all the time….But I never felt like yeah, I’m crazy. No until I met you. Not until you did that calm shit to my head, made me sober just long enough to realize what drunk felt like.”

But I think what I liked most about this unique story was that the disturbing behavior between them wasn’t the forefront message. It was more about the growth of a once meek, cowardly girl. And it leaves the reader feeling proud of all she’s overcome and the change you’ll see in her.

Badger is a book that’ll most definitely push your boundaries. I don’t think I would call it dark but its content can be fairly graphic. It’s a plot about flawed, scarred heroes I’ve yet to read and I was hooked from the beginning.

“I’m pretty sure I love you…”

“I won’t ever love you back,” he said. It wasn’t a slight, ugly as the words were. It was a fact, impersonal and blunt.

If you’re expecting a sweet/lovely romance, then this really is not the book for you. It was a raw, gritty, so incredibly unique and an emotional read that was written in such a poetic, intelligent, enticing way. A story that equally put a smile on my face and left me heartbroken.
