Review: The Paper Swan

The Paper Swan
The Paper Swan by Leylah Attar

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

description

I really had no idea what to expect when I started this book.

The story starts off with a kidnapping. BUT. This is not one of those stories with a typical ‘falling for my kidnapper’ storyline. It’s a story that is full of misunderstandings, revenge, love, and a past that links it all.

description

I don’t want to say much more on the plot because I feel like anything mentioned would really spoil it all. What I can point out is the writing is quite amazing, the storyline flowed nicely from past to present and back again, and it is filled with twists, turns, and a really beautiful love story entwined in it all.

description

The characters were easy to like (despite their many mistakes and flaws) and even though there are some dire moments, I found myself reallyyy laughing at the sarcastic humor of the heroine. I am not sure if the author intended these moments to be so funny, but her inner thoughts while in these situations had me laughing out loud.

Though at times I found some things a tad predictable and some moments a little unrealistic (and some moments dragged while others were a little too fast paced in my opinion), I still enjoyed it! I was intrigued with how everything would play out, and there are some definite sweet moments that will tug at your heart strings!

A little back story first…

Parker and Ben have been best friends since their freshman year in college. Now living together, they constantly have to tell those around them they will NEVER develop feelings for each other…because people who are that close, who get along that well, who are both crazy attractive can keep platonic feelings right? ……

Parker, who’s been recently dumped by her long-term boyfriend, decides she’s been doing it wrong and that she should be having sex like her good friend Ben- no strings attached. Get in, get off, get out. And who better than to do this with? Why, your best friend, that’s who!

In Parker’s mind, you should at least like the person you’re sleeping with just a little, and since she gets along amazingly well with Ben and has zero feelings for him (yea right), and he enjoys casual sex more than most and has ZERO desire to be in a relationship, he’d make the perfect candidate.

So a nice little arrangement is developed (I’d like to just stop here and say their first kiss while agreeing to the terms of this ‘friends with sex’ deal was freaking HOT). They’ll have sex, but as soon as it starts to get weird, or too much, or the other wants out, they’ll just say the word and things will go back to normal. No hard feelings, no weirdness (again..yea right).

I’m sure you can all guess what happens after that….

description

I lovedddd loved loved the friendship between Ben and Parker. Their conversations, the little games they would play, the way they supported one another was insanely adorable. This book was also filled with LOL moments, and some swoon worthy moments as well. I found myself laughing and smiling while reading quite a few times. I REALLY enjoyed Lauren’s writing and the characters.

So why not 5 stars you ask? Well this book is about friends who decide to have SEX right? Well then where was all this hot sex? Don’t get me wrong, there were a few scenes, though not very detailed, that were still steamy..but maybe I expected a tad more? I understand it was more about the development of their feelings and the realization that they belong together, which WAS greatly written. But I kind of wanted maybe just one ‘jaw-dropping-holy-crap-that-was-hot’ sex scene.

All in all a great read though! And I would definitely recommend this one!

Brutally Beautiful
Brutally Beautiful by Christine Zolendz

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

“Kade Grayson kissed the thoughts right out of my head, kissed my fears and anxiousness away, leaving me empty, and then poured himself in.”

This is exactly how I feel right now. This book, this wonderfully beautiful magnificent twisted book, has stolen all of my thoughts and words.

description

description

I don’t even know what to write, what to say, to convey how obsessed I am with this story. To describe how I devoured this thing and how I wish I could go back in time and erase my memory so I could experience it again.

description

description

Christine Zolendz writes like nothing I have seen before. Her words, her characters, everything she put into this BLEW ME AWAY. I have rarely come across words that were so beautiful. She made me laugh, made me cry, and literally took my breath away.

description

And since I can’t come up with anything else, because this woman and story and characters have left me speechless, I’ll leave it with these two words. READ IT!!!!!!

Review: The Evolution of Mara Dyer

The Evolution of Mara Dyer
The Evolution of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

A little tally to begin:

Number of times I screamed “W.T.F!!???” out loud – 96

Number of times I was actually scared to leave my room because of all the creepy things happening – 8

Number of times I had to put my kindle down and just stare at the wall to fully digest WTF had just happened – 11

Number of times I wished I was 17 because I was SWOONING HARD OVER NOAH FREAKING SHAW- 3,857,892,357

How a book can make me scared to leave the safety of my bed and needing to turn the lights on to do so in one chapter then have me drooling over a 17 year old in the next is beyond comprehension. But HOLY SHIT this book did. The first book in this series had me scratching my head, questioning everyone and everything, but this book….THIS BOOK has had my heart pounding, heart swooning, nerves on edge, mind reeling, and my jaw on the floor. And again questioning EVERYTHING.

description

I obviously cannot go into any detail about what happens in this book because that would just ruin the experience of reading the first. But I can say IT IS BRILLIANT. The webs of the plot just keep getting deeper and more twisted, and that ending?!?! I REFUSE. No. It’s not true. I will not believe it! NOPE!

description

Michelle’s writing is fantastic. Each scene leapt off the page and made me feel like I was there. And even though this is YA- the romance in it is JUST BEAUTIFUL. Some of the most romantic lines I have EVER read.

description

READ IT. Read it read it read it. This may take some people out of their comfort zone because of the genres, but it is most definitely worth the wild ride it takes you on!

*Now excuse me- I am locking myself away to read book 3. With all the lights on. And the blinds shut. With a baseball bat clutched in my hand.

Review: The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer
The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

“I didn’t know what was real, what was a nightmare, what was a memory.” – Mara Dyer

description

Well Mizz Mara Dyer, you and I have that in common. I spent the majority of this book in a state of utter confusion with the question “WTF is happening?” on repeat in my brain.

Let’s break it down quickly, shall we? Mara Dyer wakes up in a hospital having been involved in an accident she has no recollection of. Because of this accident, Mara is left in a state of confusion, suffering from hallucinations, hearing voices, having vivid nightmares…or are they memories? And because of the nature of the accident, which I shall not divulge because that would be a spoiler (!), Mara and her family move to Florida to start over in hopes of Mara’s odd behavior stopping. Does it work? Yeaaaa ..not so much.

description

Mara tries to adjust to this new life, along with her fiery sarcastic personality and shotty recollection of the accident, when creepy ..I repeat CREEPY ASS THINGS begin to happen. People dying, kidnappings, and freak accidents, just to name a few. As the story progresses, Mara begins to question her sanity (along with myself) as the line between reality and fantasy begins to blur.

description

Among all the creepiness, Mara meets Noah …sweet, sweet, weird, teenage man-whore Noah, who- I would like to point out even though I adored him and the way he helped Mara- I was so suspicious of. I had this weird spidey sense there was more to him and more to what he actually knew about Mara than what was being lead on. Was I right? Well, I can’t actually say because that would be another spoiler!

description

The dialogue was incredibly witty and funny, some of the situations were SO. DAMN.WEIRD and again CREEPY, and all along I was so intrigued that I couldn’t wait to finish to get some damn answers. And did I get answers? Well not until the last 85% of the book did I begin to even remotely understand what the hell was going on.

I didn’t read much on this book before I started it, and I had no idea it was YA or paranormal. The last book I think I read close to these categories was Twilight which was around 7 years ago. Regardless of these facts, I still enjoyed this weird little book SO MUCH. I wasn’t even sure how I wanted to rate it, but after finishing and not being able to stop thinking about the story I knew this one was a winner. Mara and Noah drew me in and THAT ENDING …HOLY MOTHER OF CHRIST THAT ENDING. **runs off to read book 2**

Review: Ruin

Ruin
Ruin by C.D. Reiss

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

description

I was on the fence when I read the first book in this series, Spin. Mainly because the writing style took some getting used to, and to me, the feelings and intensity of Spin and Theresa’s relationship were a little too fast paced. It seemed like after only 2 encounters, these two were claiming their undying love for one another, Theresa went from sweet socialite to a bad ass willing to shoot anyone who crossed her, and Spin was willing to leave the life he’s really only ever known for some heiress he’s had sex with a few times.

BUT- and this is a BIG BUT – with all that being said, I am so glad I continued with the series because it vastly improved with this second book!

description

I felt more of a connection to the characters and was definitely more invested in their relationship. I think this may have had to do with this book being dual POV while the first was only in Theresa’s POV. Being inside Antonio’s head gave more feeling, depth, and angst to the story.

description

I highlighted a good portion of this, and I came to understand Theresa a bit more. I actually love these two together and was routing for them the entire time! I won’t go into plot details b/c I hate giving anything away someone may prefer to discover on their own. But I will say this book was definitely hotter, more romantic, and had more action and nail biting moments than the first.

description

I thoroughly enjoyed it and am looking forward to the last book in this series!

Review: Sustained by Emma Chase

Sustained
Sustained by Emma Chase

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

description

My cheeks still hurt from all the smiling I did while I read this story. I am convinced Emma Chase can not write a bad book!

Jake is a defense attorney who likes very little drama in his life. He likes order. He likes routine. He has everything planned out regarding his career and has no room for love or relationships or drama.

Chelsea is a sweet, selfless, 26 year old grad student with a heart of gold who learns she is now the legal guardian to six children, her nieces and nephews.

After Jake has a rather funny first encounter with one of Chelsea’s nephews, Jake and Chelsea meet and hit it off rather quickly. Without much thought or effort, Jake falls into their routine and becomes a part of this new family, and finds himself completely sucked into all their chaos. Between piano lessons, One Direction concerts, Mommy & Me Classes, he becomes fiercely overprotective of this clan. The scenes with the kids either had me laughing hysterically or tearing up from sweetness overload.

“We need to add a piano teacher to the list.’ Rosaleen tells her aunt as we walk into the kitchen.
“What do you mean? You have a piano teacher.”
“Not anymore.” The seven-year-old shrugs.
Chelsea turns suspicious eyes on me.
And I have no guilt at all. “That guy shouldn’t be teaching children. Sadistic son of a bitch.”
………
“He hit my knuckles with the ruler ‘cause I messed up.”
“Exhibit A,” I interrupt. “What kind of sick fuck could hit her?” I motion to Rosaleen’s joyously precious face. “Rory? He’s another story. Her? No way.”
Rosaleen continues. “So Jake went out to his car and came back in with baseball bat Monsier La Rue asked him what he was doing and Jake told him, “You hit that kid’s knuckles again, I’m gonna hit you with this.’ ”
Chelsea turns to me, her head tilted and jaw slack.
I admit nothing.
“So…he fired us,” Rosaleen concludes.
I nudge her with my elbow and offer her a carrot “We fired him.”

She pops it in her mouth while a smile.

Jake and Chelsea’s relationship develops naturally (thankfully no instal-love) and their attraction to each other develops into a more meaningful relationship.

But of course with any relationship comes some drama. Jake finds himself re-assessing what he’s always wanted in life and trying to figure out if he can play the family-man role.

I want her – this fearless, stunning woman. And I want the kids. Those perfect, awful, amazing children – whom she loves with every inch of her soul. I want them to be mine. Mine to hold, mine to protect and teach. Their joy, their laughter, their love. I want to come home to it, bask in it, be the reason for it.

And dare I say, I think Drew Evans has some competition. I didn’t think Emma could ever top that hunk, but Jake is so damn swoon worthy you will instantly fall in love with him.

As always, Emma nailed the male prospective, wrote hysterical laugh out loud scenes, and of course added in a few steamy, sexy moments.
I absolutely loved how quick witted and adorable the kids were. I loved the dialogue and the sweet, heartwarming moments. I loved how natural Jake was with all the kids and how easily he found it was to care for them like they were his own.

If you are looking for a quick, light hearted, ADORABLY SWEET, romantic read, this is it my friends!

Fuel the Fire
Fuel the Fire by Krista & Becca Ritchie

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

description

When I started this series, I knew it would be a commitment and take some time to get through all 8 books. I knew each book was quite long, and the topics discussed were very different than what I have read in the past. What I didn’t know was how insanely IN LOVE I would fall with these characters and their stories and with these authors.

description

I also wasn’t sure if reading 8 books in a row revolving around the same people would get tiresome or redundant. But I say this with such certainty— Krista & Becca kept setting the bar higher and higher with each book, with the next one even better than the last. There is no way I can pick a favorite character or a favorite book in this series, they each were just that good.

description

I cannot stress enough how unique and amazing their writing is, and how they made me feel these fictional characters were real life people who have buried themselves in my heart and who I would die to be friends with. With their writing, you feel all of the characters’ pain, the joy, the love; their highest of highs and their lowest of lows.

description

So I leave with this…give this series a chance. I know it’s long. I know there’s a lot of books. But you will not regret one minute of it. I found myself completely immersed in the world they’ve built and wishing that I could spend an eternity with these characters. Just absolute perfection & I simply cannot recommend this series enough!
